A West End incident on Friday morning left a senior citizen critically injured and two Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers hospitalized. The event unfolded around 5:30 a.m. near Comox and Broughton streets, when a male driver allegedly drove erratically, ramming several vehicles, speeding through Nelson Park, and intentionally driving onto a sidewalk.

The senior, who was on a motorized scooter, was unable to avoid the vehicle and sustained critical injuries, for which they are currently hospitalized. Two VPD officers responding to the scene were also taken to the hospital after their police cruiser was rammed by the suspect's vehicle, resulting in its destruction and the suspect's vehicle flipping over.

The suspect was subsequently arrested near Comox and Bute streets, after Vancouver Fire Rescue Services extricated him from his overturned vehicle. The VPD indicated that mental health and drug use issues are being considered as possible factors in the incident. The Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating to determine the motive.
