Coquitlam, B.C. – Coquitlam City Council officially approved the final design plans for the initial phase of Glen Park's revitalization project during its Monday meeting. This decision paves the way for construction to begin in Summer 2026, marking a significant step forward in enhancing one of the city's key community spaces.
The Glen Park Master Plan, which guides the redevelopment, was recently updated to incorporate extensive public feedback, an assessment of existing neighborhood amenities, and consultations with School District 43. This collaborative approach has shaped an updated vision designed to balance current community needs with future uses. The comprehensive upgrade initiative will be implemented in two distinct phases, extending through 2028.
Phase One of the project focuses on several key enhancements. A relocated dog off-leash area will be established on the park's west side, nestled among mature trees. This new facility will feature separate fenced spaces for both small and large dogs, and will include fun agility features, flexible and fixed seating for owners, and shade. Importantly, lighting and drinking water will be added to support year-round use, a key upgrade moved forward from the original Phase Two plans based on community input. The existing off-leash area will remain operational until the new space is complete.
Additionally, a 'forest-inspired Nature Play Zone' is planned for the northeast corner of the park, adjacent to Glen Elementary. This innovative space will utilize natural elements such as logs, boulders, and tree stumps to create an outdoor learning environment and foster creative play. Designed to be shared with School District 43, the zone will be open to the public, with priority for students during school hours. Initial trail improvements, including realigned and widened pathways in the park's northern section, will also enhance access to these new amenities.
Looking ahead, Phase Two improvements are currently in the planning stages, with design work anticipated to begin next year. This subsequent phase is slated to include accessible washrooms in a central location near the playground, a fun and interactive water play spray deck for all ages, and new standalone covered picnic shelters. The existing plaza and picnic area will also be retained and expanded, alongside the creation of additional social gathering spaces throughout the park. Furthermore, park-wide trail updates will ensure accessibility, with primary asphalt pathways connecting all major amenities.
