SURREY, BC — The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has assumed control of a homicide investigation after an 18-year-old man was shot and killed in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood early Sunday morning.

At approximately 12:22 a.m. on May 31, 2026, Surrey Police Service frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire in the area of 138 Street and 62 Avenue. Upon arrival, officers located a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle that had collided with a power pole. Despite medical interventions by attending police and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities have since identified the deceased as 18-year-old Surrey resident Gaurav Deol. While no arrests have been made, investigators believe the fatal shooting was a targeted incident. Police have stated that Deol did not possess a criminal record, though investigators are currently examining his recent contacts with individuals associated with organized crime to determine a potential motive.

Approximately 25 minutes after the initial shooting, authorities received a report of a vehicle fire near 106 Avenue and Salisbury Drive. Emergency crews discovered a burning white Toyota SUV, which investigators believe was used in the homicide.

The incident marks Surrey's 13th homicide of the year. IHIT, with support from the Surrey Police Service, is conducting an extended canvass of both the shooting and arson locations. Authorities are appealing to the public for witnesses, asking anyone with information or dashcam footage from either area between 10:00 p.m. on Saturday and 1:00 a.m. on Sunday to contact the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or to submit details via email at [email protected].
