BURNABY, BC — Distance runners across the province are gearing up for the inaugural BC Athletics 5000m Track Championships, scheduled to take place on June 27, 2026, at Burnaby Central Track. Hosted as part of the Vancouver Thunderbirds 5000m Festival, the event is designed to give athletes a premier, festival-style championship racing opportunity.
The meet will serve as the official Provincial Championship 5000m event for the U20 (birth years 2007/2008), Open (2006+), and Masters (35+) categories. Organizers say the spirit of the event is to celebrate distance running by bringing athletes, coaches, clubs, and supporters together in a highly focused and energetic atmosphere. It provides competitors a platform to pursue personal bests, earn provincial recognition, and achieve championship success.
Eligibility and Registration
To toe the starting line, athletes must be at least 16 years old (born in 2010 or earlier) as of December 31, 2026. Competitors must also hold a valid 2026 BC Athletics Annual Athlete Membership, though equivalents from other Provincial Branches or World Athletics Federations will be accepted. Out-of-province athletes must email proof of valid membership and good standing prior to registering. Notably, non-member single-event licenses will not be accepted for this championship.
Registration is currently open online. The regular registration deadline is June 14 at 11:59 PM (PST) with a base fee of $40.00 per entry. A late registration window will remain open until June 21 at 11:59 PM (PST) for $50.00. Additional charges, including a 5% GST and a $5.00 Officials Development Fee, apply to all entries. Organizers enforce a strict policy of no refunds and no accepted registrations after the June 21 deadline.
Race Day Logistics and Rules
To ensure accurate heat seeding, athletes must submit a valid outdoor performance achieved between June 21, 2025, and June 21, 2026. Times from certified road races are acceptable, and athletes without a 5000m or 5K time can submit converted 3000m, 10,000m, or 10K performances using the Mercier Score Calculator.
On the day of the event, there will be no technical meeting and no call room; competitors will simply check in at the starting line. Athletes are allowed a maximum spike length of 7mm (pyramid or Christmas tree). Club-affiliated runners are encouraged to wear their club-issued uniforms, though present or past BC Athletics and Athletics Canada team uniforms are strictly prohibited.
Fans and supporters will be able to follow the action through a live results link, which will be distributed to participants and posted on social media prior to the event. Emergency first aid will be available on the track infield, with Burnaby Central Hospital designated as the nearest medical facility.
Following the races, championship medals will be awarded exclusively to eligible BC Athletics members at the designated Awards Desk, complete with a podium and backdrop for photos.
Organizers expressed their gratitude ahead of the meet, noting that the event "would not be possible without the dedication of our BC Athletics Officials and event volunteers".
