BC Hydro has announced a significant expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure through a new smart charging initiative, part of its ambitious Power Smart 2.0 plan. The utility issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) on May 28, 2026, seeking technology partners to implement a system that will automatically shift EV charging to off-peak hours.

This voluntary program, expected to roll out to customers in early 2027, will integrate with BC Hydro's existing Peak Saver program. It leverages telematics technology already embedded in most modern EVs, eliminating the need for customers to purchase or install additional charging equipment. Participating EV drivers will be eligible for annual rewards of up to $100.

Charlotte Mitha, President and CEO of BC Hydro, emphasized the program's objective to address the growing electricity demand in British Columbia, where over 230,000 EVs are currently on the roads. By encouraging charging during overnight, lower-demand periods, the initiative aims to alleviate pressure on the power grid during peak evening hours while providing a financial incentive for drivers. Participants will retain the flexibility to override the automatic charging schedule at any time.

aThis smart EV charging expansion is a key component of BC Hydro’s broader $1 billion Power Smart 2.0 plan, which also includes various other energy-saving incentives, such as instant in-store rebates of up to $200 on energy-efficient products like ENERGY STAR® appliances, air purifiers, and portable air conditioners. The RFP for technology partners is scheduled to close on June 30, 2026.
