PORT MOODY, B.C. — In honor of National Indigenous History Month this June, the City of Port Moody and local partners have unveiled a month-long schedule of free cultural events and activities designed to celebrate the heritage, resilience, and diversity of Canada’s First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

“In June, we celebrate the rich history and vitality of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures and communities in Canada, and all Indigenous Peoples worldwide,” said Port Moody Mayor Meghan Lahti. “I invite you to consider the ways in which you can honour and learn about the cultures and contributions of Canada's Indigenous Peoples, and to participate in one or more of the cultural activities and experiences happening locally in June.”

Mayor Lahti also acknowledged that the city sits on the Traditional Territory of several Coast Salish Nations, expressing gratitude for their ongoing stewardship of the land and their generosity in sharing their teachings.

Throughout the month, the city will host several educational and artistic experiences for the public. While all events are free to attend, some require advance registration.

The schedule of events for June 2026 includes:

  • Art at Council (June 9): Tamia Overes, a multidisciplinary artist of səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation heritage, will speak at 7:00 p.m. at the Inlet Theatre. Overes will discuss Life Beneath the Inlet, her recent mural commissioned by Imperial Oil that visually reflects the interconnected ecosystem of the Burrard Inlet. No registration is required.

  • Shoreline Trail House Post Guided Walks (June 14 & 28): Artistic director Tasha Faye Evans will lead 90-minute walks around the Inlet, sharing teachings and reflections on the In the Presence of Ancestors project. The walks will highlight the trail’s five house posts and the Indigenous carvers who created them to honor the land's original caretakers. Walks depart from the Rocky Point Pier at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. each day. Advance registration is required.

  • “The Boys Who Braid Their Hair” Photo Exhibition (June 20–25): Hosted at the Civic Centre Galleria, this exhibition explores the meaning behind the braid. Showcasing narratives of boys and men who embrace their spiritual connection through their hair, the exhibit aims to challenge stereotypes, promote inclusivity, and celebrate cultural diversity. No registration is required.

  • Storytelling with Kung Jaadee (June 27): Professional Indigenous storyteller and published author Kung Jaadee will share traditional Haida legends and history at the Port Moody Recreation Complex. Kung Jaadee, who belongs to the X̱aayda (Haida), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Tlingit, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, will host 45-minute sessions at 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Due to sensitive subject matter, this event is recommended for ages seven and up. Advance registration is required.

  • Birds of Hope at PoMoArts (June 14–21): Community arts center PoMoArts is inviting the public to drop in during operating hours to craft "Birds of Hope." The interactive art initiative encourages the community to create messages of hope and healing while reflecting on Indigenous history and experience. No registration is required.
