British Columbia has announced a landmark energy agreement, with Ksi Lisims LNG finalizing a deal to supply Germany's Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) with lower-carbon LNG. This agreement marks the first European LNG deal for B.C. and Canada, with SEFE committing to purchase one million tonnes per year of LNG for up to 20 years, with deliveries projected to commence by the early 2030s.

The agreement represents a major step forward for the Ksi Lisims LNG project, bringing it closer to a final investment decision. Premier David Eby underscored B.C.'s long-standing support for the project and acknowledged the federal government's collaboration in facilitating this crucial deal. Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, Adrian Dix, highlighted the global demand for B.C.'s resources, emphasizing that the agreement will diversify trade and provide stable energy to European markets.

This development follows previous advancements for the Ksi Lisims LNG project, including the issuance of an Environmental Assessment Certificate in September 2025 and a facility permit from the BC Energy Regulator in November 2025. With these major permits in place, the project is poised to advance to construction, anticipating nearly $30 billion in investment and the creation of thousands of skilled jobs.

Federal Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Tim Hodgson, described the agreement as more than just an energy deal, emphasizing its role in building a stronger Canadian economy and meeting the global demand for reliable, low-carbon Canadian energy in partnership with Indigenous Peoples. Eva Clayton, President of the Nisga'a Lisims Government, expressed pride in contributing to Canada's deepening ties with Europe, noting that Ksi Lisims LNG is designed to address both energy security and climate ambition by offering a stable, low-emissions source of LNG with strong environmental and social governance.

The Ksi Lisims LNG project is a key component of B.C.'s Look West Strategy, which forecasts $88 billion in major projects over the next three years. Efforts to enhance investor certainty include the November 2025 passage of the Energy Statutes Amendment Act, designed to reduce costs for industrial connections to the BC Hydro grid and expedite the North Coast Transmission Line.

Further solidifying the project's viability, BC Hydro signed a memorandum of understanding in January 2026 with Ksi Lisims LNG. This agreement outlines the delivery of up to 600 megawatts of clean electricity to the proposed floating LNG facility on Nisga’a Treaty Lands, which will enable it to produce net-zero emissions LNG, reinforcing B.C.'s competitive edge in the global market. The project is a collaboration between Western LNG, Rockies LNG Partners, and the Nisga’a Nation, aiming to be Canada’s second-largest LNG terminal, exporting up to 12 million tonnes per year.
