VanDusen Botanical Garden has announced it will host a Summer Solstice Medicine Wheel Ceremony on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The event, led by Elders Phil Mechuskosis L’Hirondelle (Nehiyaw/Cree and British Heritage) and Gisele L’Hirondelle (Metis from New Brunswick) from 'All My Relations Teachings,' will mark the summer solstice and usher in the new season.

The ceremony is described as a symbol of holistic teachings rooted in the cycles of nature, featuring drumming and prayers. All community members are welcome to attend.

Participants are encouraged to bring a portable chair or blanket for seating, and a small stone to infuse with prayers and leave at the Medicine Wheel. Attendees also have the option to bring a drum, if they have one, and food to share with others at the conclusion of the ceremony.

The event will take place outdoors near the Canadian Heritage Garden and the garden's maze. Visitors should enter through the Visitor Centre admissions desk and plan to arrive 15 to 20 minutes early to allow sufficient time to reach the Medicine Wheel area. Maps will be available at the admissions desk. Attendees are advised to dress appropriately for the outdoor weather conditions.

While there is no specific charge for participating in the ceremony, regular garden admission fees will apply. However, VanDusen Botanical Garden extends free general admission to individuals who identify as Indigenous, Metis, or Inuit. Registration is not required for the event.
